 TORONTO ZOO OPENS A MULTI-FAITH PRAYER AND SPIRITUAL SPACE (MUSALA YAMEEN)

 Muslims and other Communities to enjoy a space of worship at the zoo now

(Toronto, October 29 2020): After months of efforts and dialogues between the Toronto Zoo management and a members of Zero Mortgage, a MULTI-FAITH PRAYER AND SPIRITUAL SPACE (MUSALA YAMEEN) opened this week.

The space is located in the Discovery Zone beside the Conservation Clubhouse at the Toronto Zoo. There is a large room that has a private bathroom and an open sink to allow people to perform ablution.  The building and bathroom are handicap accessible. Zero Mortgage had the privilege to furnish this place and provide 20 prayer mats at Musalla Yameen. The prayer place is located on the right side of the park when entering; therefore, Zero Mortgage has named it, ‘Yameen’ (Arabic for Right Hand).

In a meeting with the Toronto Zoo team, Sh Habeeb Alli expressed, “Our Muslim community appreciates Toronto Zoo opening this place this week. I and various other members have been working closely with Toronto Zoo to open this Multi-Faith Prayer and Spiritual Space. We understand October is a Islamic History Month as declared by the Federal Government and many cities across Canada. We wanted to make the announcement for its opening this month. I appreciate the furnishing of the space by Zero Mortgage as a Sadiqa Jariya dedication to Sh Dr Nizam Yacouby and commemoration to the Late Sh Dr Abdul Sattar Abu Ghuddah. Our team continues to work with the Toronto Zoo in meeting more of our community needs including more Halal food options and welcome more of the community, Islamic Schools to visit the park and become members.”

Toronto Zoo is the largest zoo in Canada. It has one of the most diverse collections of animals on display of any zoo; it is currently a home to over 5,000 animals representing over 500 species. The zoo is a corporation owned by the municipal government of Toronto. Musala Yameen at the Toronto Zoo - Furnished by Zero Mortgage as Sadaqa Jariya                  

Dedication to Sh Dr Nizam Yacouby and to commemorate Sh Dr Abdul Sattar Abu Ghuddah

(Toronto, October 29 2020): Zero Mortgage team were instrumental in founding Musala Yameen at the Toronto Zoo on October 29, 2020. Zero Mortgage has furnished the Musala and as a Sadiqa Jariya (Perpetual Reward) dedication to Sh Dr Nizam Yacouby and commemoration to the late Sh Dr Abdul Sattar Abu Ghuddah. Our small Islamic Finance family in Canada wishes to honour these two large personalities who have a direct connection to Canada.

Sh Dr Nizam Yacouby

Sh Dr Nizam Yacuby of Bahrain came to Canada as a foreign student.  He completed his undergrad and graduate studies at McGill University focusing on Finance in his early 20's. He spent these formative years in Canada during a period when in 1982, multiculturalism was recognized in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  This started a 4-decade career becoming one of the world's leading Islamic finance scholars combining his finance education he obtained in Canada and the religious education he had. He is currently is one of the most sought after Shariah scholar and keynote speaker at conferences around the world. He is a Member of the Shari’ah Supervisory Board of several Islamic financial institutions, and a Member of the Standards Board and Shariah Council of AAOIFI. He has visited Canada many times to speak at conferences and is on Zero Mortgage Fatwa Board. We are happy that Canada with its inclusive Multicultural policy that Sh Nizam Yacouby was exposed to helped him to lead Islamic finance into the real-world economy. We all pray for his long life and continued visits to Canada.

(The Late) Sh Dr Abdul  Sattar Abu Ghuddah

The Late Sh Dr. Abdul Sattar AbuGhuddah (Shaheed) passed away at a Montreal Hospital in this month of October due to Covid complications. He passed away at the age of 80. He was buried in Montreal. Some of his family lives in Montreal and his extended family across Canada. Dr. Abu Ghuddah was born in Syria, held a Ph.D. in Shariah from Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. His career as a professor lasted approximately 25 years. He was a Member of the Islamic Fiqh Academy, which evolved from the Organisation of Islamic Conference. He previously held the positions of Expert and Reporter for the Islamic Fiqh Encyclopedia, Ministry of Awqaf & Islamic Affairs, State of Kuwait. He was a Member of the Shariah Supervisory Board of several Islamic financial institutions, and a Member of the Standards Board and Shariah Council of AAOIFI. He is the author of several specialist books in Fiqh & Fatwa of modern Muamalat and publications on different Islamic subjects, and regular speaker at Islamic conferences and forums. He had supervised and examined more than 120 theses, published more than 700 articles on various Islamic topics, written dozens of books, including a complete encyclopedia on Foreign Affairs in Islamic law, and much more. May his legacy and efforts he made in the Ummah be always remembered and rewarded by Allah.
